Summer Fun, Dental Trouble: Seasonal Activities That Can Damage Your Smile

June 26, 2026

Woman smiling during the summer

Summer is the season when many people are out and about enjoying the sun. You might have plans for yourself, but certain seasonal activities can be trouble for your smile if you aren’t careful. You may be at a higher risk of dental emergencies because of them. So, to help make sure your grin stays in great shape during this time of the year, here are three things that can harm your teeth.

Certain Foods and Drinks

Drinking a cool glass of lemonade can help you feel refreshed after being in the heat, but this beverage is acidic and sugary. It can erode your enamel and feed the bacteria in your mouth, which increases your risk of cavities. It’s best to stick to plain water, but eating some watermelon can be a fun alternative as well.

Popcorn is a staple snack for movie nights, but it can lead to damage if you bite down on a kernel. When you grab a handful, make sure one doesn’t find its way into your mouth, or you can shake the bowl to bring them down to the bottom. That said, crunchy vegetables and fruits may be great things to have instead.

Playing Contact Sports

With a bit more time on your hands, you might want to stay active and play sports like football or soccer with your family or friends. While you get your workout in, you may be at a higher risk of a facial blow. This can lead to a chip, crack, or knocked-out tooth! To make sure your smile stays protected, follow all safety protocols and wear a mouthguard. This oral appliance can absorb any impact and lower your risk of damage.

Going to the Pool

In order to cool off, jumping in a pool might be exactly what you need. However, the chlorine can weaken your enamel if you open your mouth underwater. Just make sure you keep it closed to avoid trouble. Not only that, but don’t run along the edge or do tricks in the shallow end. You might hit an edge and injure yourself. Wear sunscreen and SPF lip balm, and you can make sure you stay protected.

The good news is that you can still enjoy these summer classics, just make sure you take any precautions needed to protect your smile. That way, you can keep enjoying your time and not worry about a dental emergency.
