College Bound? Include These Items in Your Dorm Dental Kit

August 29, 2026

College students walking down steps

Moving into a college dorm for the first time comes with a seemingly endless packing list. Between bedding, clothes, school supplies, snacks, and all the little things that make your new space feel like home, it’s easy to overlook something as simple as your dental supplies.

A well-stocked dorm dental kit can make maintaining your oral health much easier, especially when your schedule gets busy. Before you head off to campus, make sure you have these essentials packed and ready to go.

A Toothbrush and Toothpaste

Let’s start with the basics! Pack a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and consider bringing a backup toothbrush in case yours gets lost or worn out.

A toothbrush with soft bristles is generally a good choice for cleaning your teeth without unnecessarily irritating your gums. If you use an electric toothbrush at home, there’s no reason to leave it behind just because you’re moving into a dorm. Just remember to pack the charger.

You may also want a ventilated toothbrush holder to keep your toothbrush clean and protected between uses.

Floss or Another Interdental Cleaner

Your toothbrush can clean the surfaces it reaches, but it can’t effectively clean every space between your teeth. That’s where floss or another interdental cleaner comes in.

Choose whichever option you’re most likely to use consistently. Traditional floss, floss picks, and other interdental cleaning tools can all make it easier to keep those hard-to-reach areas clean.

Keeping your floss somewhere visible can also serve as a helpful reminder to use it, even during those hectic weeks when studying seems to take over your entire life.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash can be a convenient addition to your dorm dental kit. Depending on your individual needs, a fluoride mouthwash may provide an additional source of fluoride to help protect against cavities.

Just remember that mouthwash isn’t a replacement for brushing and flossing. Think of it as an extra tool rather than the foundation of your oral hygiene routine.

A Travel Dental Kit

A small travel kit can be surprisingly useful when you’re living on campus. If you have a weekend trip, spring break plans, or simply want to keep dental supplies in your backpack, having a second toothbrush and small tube of toothpaste ready to go can save you from having to pack your bathroom supplies every time.

It’s also helpful to keep a few dental essentials in your backpack for those long days when you go directly from class to studying or activities.

Dental Wax and Other Personal Essentials

If you wear braces, aligners, or other dental appliances, remember to pack any supplies you regularly use. For example, orthodontic wax can be helpful if brackets or wires occasionally irritate your cheeks or lips.

You should also bring any dentist-recommended products you use regularly. If you have specific oral health needs, ask your dental professional whether there are additional supplies you should keep on hand.

Don’t Forget Your Dental Appointments

Your dental kit isn’t the only thing that should make it onto your college checklist. Before leaving home, make sure you’re up to date on your regular dental care.

If you’re going to college somewhere far from home, think about whether you’ll continue seeing your current dentist during school breaks or establish care closer to campus. Planning ahead can make it much easier to stay on top of preventive dental care throughout the school year.

A few minutes of preparation before move-in day can help make healthy dental habits one less thing to worry about once classes begin.
