People often expect me to point to some intricate restoration or a case I’m especially proud of when asked what matters most in dentistry. The truth is, though, the answer isn’t anything close to that—it’s prevention, hands down. Let me explain how I arrived at this conviction and why you should begin prioritizing routine preventive dental care if you don’t already.
The Best Treatment Is One That’s Never Necessary
I feel genuine satisfaction in tackling difficult cases, and I think it’s healthy to acknowledge that from time to time. But here’s the reality: the vast majority of those complicated situations never would have escalated if the patient had understood prevention from the get-go.
When a cavity is caught early, you’re looking at a simple filling most of the time. But when you miss that window, it usually becomes a root canal. But wait even longer, and suddenly, an extraction becomes the only option, and nobody wants that. That’s precisely why I refuse to view prevention as a dull, secondary task. I see it as the field’s most essential purpose.
The Real Challenge Isn’t Clinical; It’s Human Behavior
Knowing prevention matters is the easy part. The genuinely difficult work lies in helping someone who’s been told to “floss more” a hundred times to actually change their behavior and begin flossing daily. That’s truly where the bulk of my effort goes.
You know the old saying about leading a horse to water? After years of trying to do exactly that, I’ve shifted my approach and started walking behind the horse instead. I still bring up flossing, but now it comes after I walk patients through their own mouths, showing them exactly what I’m seeing. What I’ve discovered is that people respond far more to a personalized approach rather than the same recycled reminder.
Pushback Often Signals Something Deeper
When someone resists a preventive suggestion, the recommendation itself is rarely the issue. More often, it’s a concern about cost, a rough past experience, or simply feeling talked at rather than talked with. I’ve learned to pause and dig into what’s really driving the hesitation before rehashing the clinical reasoning. I remind myself often that patients are much more than a set of teeth; they’re people!
The Payoff Builds Over Time
My longest-standing, healthiest patient relationships all share one thing: a commitment to prevention early on. You wouldn’t believe what 10 or more years of steady preventive habits can do to fundamentally reshape what a person’s oral health looks like decades down the road, at 50, 60, 70, or even 80 years old. That’s no minor outcome.
Given the choice, I’d rather spend my career helping people avoid trouble altogether than becoming skilled at pulling teeth out and replacing them after the fact. Both skills have their place, but only one of them spares someone a difficult road entirely.
