What Can I Do if My Dental Bridge Falls Out?

February 13, 2024

Dental bridge

Dental bridges have allowed many people to enjoy having complete smiles again, but while these restorations are durable and of high quality, they are not indestructible. A dental bridge falling out of your mouth when you are speaking or eating can be an embarrassing situation, and it’s best to have the problem resolved as soon as possible. Here’s a brief overview of what you can do when your dental bridge falls out to achieve the best possible outcome.

My Dental Bridge Fell Out. What Now?

The first thing to do when your dental bridge falls out is to not panic. While this isn’t an ideal situation, it shouldn’t lead to any immediate threats to your oral or overall health, and it can be addressed with the help of a skilled dental professional. After losing your bridge, retrieve it, carefully rinse it off, and place it in a clean and secure container so you can take it to your dentist’s office.

Call Your Dentist

Once your dental bridge is secured, give your dentist’s office a call. While this issue is urgent, it’s not an emergency unless you have sustained an injury, and treating it can probably wait for a day or two. Your dentist will examine your mouth and your bridge and determine the best way to address the problem. In some cases, the bridge can be repaired and resituated in its place. In other cases, a patient may need to have tooth decay and gum disease addressed before receiving a new dental crown.

What Can Make a Dental Bridge Fall Out?

Dental bridges can fall out for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Injury: A dental bridge can be dislodged by a blow to the mouth or if the patient falls on their face.
  • Bruxism: Teeth grinding can stress dental appliances like bridges, damaging them or causing them to come loose.
  • Tooth decay: If the teeth wearing the crowns that wear the bridge become decayed, the bond keeping the appliance in place will become compromised. This tooth decay will have to be addressed before a new bridge can be placed.

A dental bridge falling out isn’t the worst thing that can happen. By keeping your head about you and seeking dental assistance, you can enjoy a complete smile again in no time.
